Makeup can do wonders to cover skin flaws, imperfections and even common signs of aging when done right.  But, if you're using colors that aren't age appropriate or flattering to your skin tone, or if you're using too heavy of a hand when applying, you may be doing yourself a disservice, making you look older than you really are.

So what are the secrets to looking younger with makeup?

Steer clear of blue. Blue eye shadow has an immediate connotation of bad makeup. Unless a professional is doing your makeup or you really know what you're doing, it's best to stick with neutral earth-toned colors.

Lay off the glitter. Glittery shadows, which are different from those with subtle shimmer, can settle into fine lines, making them more pronounced.  Subtle shimmer in a light neutral color, and applied with a very light touch, is an instant eye-booster.

Wear similar shades of lip liner and lipstick or gloss. We’re still stymied by women who insist on the dark liner, lighter lipstick look.  It’s aging, unflattering, and invariably plays UP any feathering of the lip line – not a good look for ANYONE!  We generally like a lighter touch, especially in summer.  If you are used to using a liner, try one that matches your gloss or lipstick exactly.

HOW TO IMPROVE SKIN TEXTURE

Over time, the texture of our skin naturally changes. Hydration, collagen and elastin are all important factors for smooth, soft, young-looking skin. When hormones, pollution and lifestyle come into play, they can diminish these key factors, causing dramatic changes in how your skin feels. I’ve listened to some of your most common complaints about your skin’s texture and have some answers on how to treat it.


Does your skin feel thin and look translucent? Collagen loss tends to cause the skin to become thin. And it’s especially prevalent in fairer skin tones. How do you treat it? “A combination of fillers and collagen-stimulating lasers, like eMatrix, Portrait PSR and fractionated CO2 lasers, is best for plumping up thin skin. The skin needs to be built up from underneath, as well as stimulated on the surface.


Does your skin feel dry and dehydrated? Dry, dehydrated skin is a common change that comes along with aging, since moisture levels drop and water is lost. WASHINGTON — After 33 years of consideration, the Food and Drug Administration took steps on Tuesday to sort out the confusing world of sunscreens, with new rules that specify which lotions provide the best protection against the sun and ending claims that they are truly waterproof.

The F.D.A. said sunscreens must protect equally against two kinds of the sun’s radiation, UVB and UVA, to earn the coveted designation of offering “broad spectrum” protection. UVB rays cause burning; UVA rays cause wrinkling; and both cause cancer.

The rules, which go into effect in a year, will also ban sunscreen manufacturers from claiming their products are waterproof or sweatproof because such claims are false. Instead, they will be allowed to claim in minutes the amount of time in which the product is water resistant, depending upon test results.

And only sunscreens that have a sun protection factor, or SPF, of 15 or higher will be allowed to maintain that they help prevent sunburn and reduce the risks of skin cancer and early skin aging.
