Retinol: The number one product that conquers aging.

So what is RETINOL?

According to WebMd, Retinol, (pronounced ret'i-nol) is:

A half-carotene; an intermediate in the vision cycle, it also plays a role in growth and differentiation. Syn: vitamin A1 alcohol, vitamin A1.

Vitamin A is a vitamin required by the retina of the eye in the form of the light-absorbing molecule retinal. This molecule is crucial for both scotopic and color vision. However, Vitamin A(Retinol) also serves a completely different function as the oxidized form Retinoic Acid, an important hormone-like growth factor for epithelial (skin) and other cells.†

According to New Beauty Magazine, Retinol is the secret to perfect skin. Vitamin A helps skin produce collagen, a natural component of the skin that gives the dermis a youthful, full appearance. Retinol reduces the look wrinkles by renewing skin cells in the dermis and epidermis and increasing the skin's elasticity. Physicians and aestheticians agree that this miracle ingredient has to power to make skin look younger, smoother and simply better.

Retinol is also often used to fight acne and reduce the signs of sun damage by speeding up the turnover of skin cells. Don't confuse medical-grade retinol with the over-the-counter products found in drugstores. Retinols founds in a physician's office offer an excellent opportunity to improve your skin without the dryness and irritation that occurs with retin-A. Retinols are available in several formulations and also are often blended with other beneficial skincare ingredients to increase the results obtained from these products. Depending on the formulation of the products and the strength used, these products are safe and effective for most skin types including sensitive skin.

Our Dr. Tanne Skincare line offers several Retinol products to our patients.

Retinol Serum is available in 4 strengths which can treat sensitive, normal and tolerant skin. Ingredients include:
Retinol- which is pure and active vitamin A - it works to increase cell turnover and exfoliation by stimulating cell production underneath the skin. Skin appears softer and smoother, and will help even out skin tone.
Green tea- which have potent anti-oxidant properties as well as anti-inflammatory and calming effect on the skin, and helps prevent skin irritation.
Caffeine- which enhances the antioxidant properties of the skin and acts as a topical vasoconstrictor.
Hyaluronic Acid- which aids in skin hydration

Clear It Up Retinol Toner Pads- An excellent product for oilier and acne prone skin that is in need of smoothing, clearing, and renewing. Clear It Up is also available in four strengths allowing treatment to be formulated for each patients needs. The pads not only resurface the skin, but also fortify and protect it with antioxidants. This product contains the same retinol as in our serum along with green tea, and caffeine, but does not contain the hydrating hyaluronic acid. This product is used nightly or every other night on clean skin as directed by our skincare professionals.

RejuvaEye Retinol Eye Gel - This is the first product that Dr. Tanne has personally used in the eye area that has the excellent benefits of retinol without the dryness and irritation that this delicate skin is prone to with other products. This unique moisturizing retinol product in an emollient gel, which allows for a sustained release of retinol, thereby reducing skin irritation.

We recommend the use of retinol nightly or every other night, depending on your skin and the condition being treated. As always, we are happy to formulate a skincare regimen for you and your specific skincare needs.

News/Brief History on Chemical Peels.....

Despite most people’s concern for the health of the economy, patients want to look their best to bolster their self-confidence and to feel secure in the workplace. In general, patients are choosing less expensive procedures and those with minimal downtime. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons the top minimally invasive procedures in 2008 were Botox Cosmetic, dermal fillers, and chemical peels.

Facial blemishes, wrinkles and uneven skin pigmentation are conditions which can be improved by chemical peels. Chemical peels use a solution to improve and smooth the texture of the facial skin by removing its damaged outer layers. Well-formulated blended chemical peel solutions work by breaking down the bonds between the surface cells to allowing them to be more effectively exfoliated. Improved exfoliation allows fresh cells to arise to the surface and leaves skin with an even and fresh appearance. Chemical peels are relatively inexpensive procedures, require minimal recovery time and provide excellent results for patients with all skin types and skin tones, improving the health, function and appearance of the skin.

Peeling the skin has long been a tool for improving its appearance. The use of milk, limestone, sulfur mustard, and even urine was documented for this purpose as early as 3150 BC. Most options available until the late 1800s were highly acidic or alkaline substances that worked purely as corrosives. It was not until around 1850 that physicians began using phenol, salicylic acid, resorcinol and TCA (trichloroacetic acid) for skin lightening and the improvement of skin texture. These procedures were highly invasive and presented dangers of toxicity. During the 1950s and 1960’s the concepts of blending acids as a way to reduce this toxicity came about. In the mid 1970s fruit acids (AHA’s) gained popularity, and since then many options have become available. Superficial blended chemical peels are now the standard of care and offer excellent outcomes, little or no discomfort or down-time.

Using blends of peeling ingredients gives superior results compared to straight acid peels. These newer peels do not cause surface irritation or burns. They allow topical skincare products to penetrate more effectively to strengthen, smooth and brighten the skin. The addition of Vitamin C and other collagen stimulating ingredients, along with skin brighteners increases the excellent outcomes of these peel treatments. These newer blended peels also minimize post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), which was a common negative side effect of performing chemical peels on patients with darker skin tones.

The correct peel for each patient is determined based on the condition being treated. These peels are noninvasive, exfoliating treatments that rely on fruit acids, vitamins, herbs, antioxidants and pigment suppressing agents to loosen the “glue” that binds dead cells to skin’s surface. Superficial blended peels are available for every skin type and condition. They are used for the treatment of sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, melasma, acne scars, acne, rosacea and discoloration. They promote the growth of new skin and collagen with an improved texture and radiance that is noticeable in just a few days. The result is smoother, tighter, more hydrated new skin, ultimately, leaving you with a clearer, more youthful complexion.

**A variety of superficial blended chemical peels are available at Cosmetic Laser MD***

Face the Facts About Sun Exposure

Let's face it.
Prolonged exposure to the sun will lead to premature aging of the skin, wrinkles, discoloration, and even skin cancer. Even worse: The use of tanning beds! In July 2009, The World Health Organization (WHO) declared ultraviolet (UV) radiation from tanning machines one of THE most dangerous forms of cancer-causing radiation. Risk of Melanoma is increased 75% when tanning bed use starts before age 35. A good sunscreen  - such as our outstanding Solar Protection products - to protect your skin from the ultraviolet rays is a must! Basal Cell is the most common kind of skin cancer, and the one directly related to cumulative effects of exposure to sunlight. These unsightly lesions can even appear up to 20 years after overexposure to sunlight. Even one sunburn can increase risk significantly. That is why we urge constant protection from the sun no matter what your skin tone is. Ask us about the best sunscreen for your skin.

What can I do to treat my sun damage?
Topical Tools: Revolutionary changes in formulas and technologies have now allowed for products that will literally change the appearance of your skin, beyond what you thought possible from a jar! Ask Dr. Tanne, Ginnie, our Skin Care Specialist or Meaghan our Licensed Aesthetician, what will work for you!

Let Dr. Tanne, with her experience and artistry introduce you to the next step in rejuvenation! Dark circles, crow's feet and baggy eyelids are all aging, so it is hardly surprising that Botox, facial fillers treatments, fractional laser and skincare are fast becoming the popular request by patients!
